History

Unfiltered Records is a New York–based independent record label with a deep-rooted passion for alternative and dream pop, proudly operating since 2003. Founded by musician and producer Andy Chase—best known as a founding member of the critically acclaimed indie rock band Ivy—the label was born as a creative home for Chase’s own projects and collaborations.

In its early years, Unfiltered released albums from Chase’s band Brookville, as well as Paco, the side project of Ivy’s singer Dominique Durand. These early releases helped define the label’s sonic identity: atmospheric, melodic, and emotionally rich music that critics and fans alike came to associate with the phrase “moody dream pop.”

As word spread, Unfiltered Records quickly evolved from a personal outlet into a respected platform for emerging talent. The label released the debut album from The Postmarks, which climbed into the CMJ Top 20 for five consecutive weeks, and introduced audiences to The Grey Race, a Brooklyn-by-way-of-New Zealand outfit that blended indie sensibilities with lush pop textures. Unfiltered also championed international voices, including Ukrainian singer-songwriter Lana Mir, and gave a platform to American artists such as Stroik, a North Carolina native whose work embodied the label’s ethos of heartfelt, timeless songwriting.

In 2009, Unfiltered Records took a major step forward by entering into a partnership with Warner Music Group’s Independent Label Group, expanding its reach and distribution. This collaboration produced a series of well-received releases, further solidifying the label’s reputation as a trusted curator of sophisticated alternative pop.

Unfiltered’s influence even found its way into Hollywood: in 2012, filmmaker Judd Apatow name-checked the label in his feature film This Is 40, a testament to its enduring cultural relevance.

Now, with a catalog that spans two decades and a reputation for discovering and nurturing distinct voices, Unfiltered Records continues to stand as a beacon for artists who value craft, atmosphere, and authenticity over trends.

The label remains today as a strong presence and its rich catalogue is a testament to Unfiltered Records’ reputation as one of the preeminent purveyors of indie pop music.
